The Anatomy of Interpretation
Every canvas in this collection begins in identical silence: with a piece of willow charcoal mapping out abstract, basic, geometric shapes. At the start, there is no subject. There is no figure, no landscape, no face, and no object. There is only an uncompromised structural conversation with a blank space—blocking out extremities with straight, malleable lines. This is the foundation of structural discipline.
Open Canvas was born from this exact philosophy—a shared vision between its co-founders, Nikhil and Geetanjali. While Nikhil brings the structural discipline, raw creative execution, and technical rigor of the brush to the canvas, Geetanjali provides the critical anchor, strategic direction, and shared passion that allows the studio to thrive. Together, they shape the identity of Open Canvas, balancing artistic impulse with intentional vision.
The journey from that initial charcoal line to the final visual statement is a transition of profound change. The work here does not exist to replicate reality. A camera can document what is present; the artist must interpret what is felt. Whether working within the bold, distorted brushstrokes of modern pop art or navigating the disciplined hierarchy of edges in traditional academic painting, the objective remains entirely un-borrowed: to translate reality into something that will stir the soul.
What you see on these pages is not an imitation of the world. Driven by Nikhil’s creative expression of the world and built on the foundation he and Geetanjali have laid together, it is an intentional, structured view of how we choose to see it.
